The District of Squamish is hosting seven community engagement sessions about the future of Garibaldi Estates neighbourhood between Feb. 27 and March 9.

With Squamish and B.C.’s population predicted to continue to grow over the next 20 years, the District is looking for feedback from the community about land use in the Estates.

Opportunity to provide input to the District and talk with District staff will be available at the following engagement sessions:

  • Feb. 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mamquam Elementary School
  • March 1 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Black Tusk Room at Brennan Park Recreation Centre
  • March 1 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mamquam Elementary School
  • March 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mamquam Elementary School
  • March 6 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mamquam Elementary School
  • March 8 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Mamquam Elementary School
  • March 9 from 1 to 3 p.m. online

“Change over 20 years is inevitable and this neighbourhood planning process is the opportunity for residents to help shape that change in Garibaldi Estates and imagine the future of the neighbourhood together,” said Mayor Armand Hurford in a news release.

Six sub-areas have been created within the planning to explore land use scenarios: Commercial, Diamond Head North, Diamond Head South, Estates North, Estates Centre and Estates East. Among each sub-area, there are two or three scenarios to consider which include a variety of densities, with at least one including no height increase.

Additionally, there are 10 emerging ideas — including aspects like childcare, outdoor space and transportation among others — to consider along with the density scenarios.

“This process provides the community with a voice to preserve and enhance the things they love,” said Hurford in the release.

“It is widely recognized that Squamish is a desirable location with tremendous growth pressures and challenges that come along with that. Without a neighbourhood plan, the Garibaldi Estates would evolve in a way that only considers individual development interests, rather than a vision for the neighbourhood as a whole, shaped with the direct input of the community.”

All of the land use scenarios, emerging ideas and registration for an engagement session are available at LetsTalkSquamish.ca/Garibaldi-Estates-Plan
