After declaring a climate emergency in 2019, and passing its Community Climate Action Plan (CCAP) in 2020, the District of Squamish (DOS) is taking a step forward to advise locals how they can help.

The DOS has unveiled a new interactive website to inform residents about what they can do to hit the target of cutting emissions by 45% by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

Among the available resources are: advice on how to take action, information on everything from better understanding climate change and its effects, what an individual carbon footprint is, and how emissions are calculated.

"The climate emergency is at the forefront of our policies, decision-making and operations and it is imperative that we work together as a community to realize the impacts of our actions," Mayor Karen Elliott said in a release.

"Small steps can make a big impact if we are all in this together, and it can be as simple as programming your thermostat, composting your food scraps or taking transit just one day per week. Climate change is happening and we have no choice but to take it seriously. We each have a role to play in rising to the global climate change challenge and when we do so, we truly can and will make a difference."

The site also includes: links to videos, books and podcasts about climate change; guides on electric vehicles, active transportation, waste and buildings; a climate action checklist for reducing one's carbon footprint; and information about local plans to combat climate change, including the CCAP.

Beyond individuals, there are also resources and guidelines for developers and businesses.
