Bye-bye, seniors committee.
District of Squamish council on Feb. 4 voted to decommission the municipality's Select Committee on Seniors Issues, which had been dormant for two years. The committee's most recent meeting took place on Dec. 14, 2010, stated a corporate services report to council. Four meetings took place that year and only five the previous year, it stated.
Squamish Mayor Rob Kirkham was selected as a member of the committee. Since the 2011 municipal election, district officials haven't appointed new members of council to the seniors committee.
After talking with seniors, Kirkham said many were critical of the committee structure. There are two active seniors groups in Squamish - Squamish Senior Citizens Home Society and Creative Connections for Seniors, run through Vancouver Coastal Health. Municipal staff anticipate communicating with both organizations to better understand issues important to Squamish seniors, Kirkham said.
