Eighteen adult dogs and 11 puppies were seized by the SPCA from a Squamish breeder on Wednesday, it was revealed Thursday morning.

While executing a warrant, the B.C. SPCA seized the 29 dogs, including Old English sheepdogs, Coton de Tulear, bearded collies and a Tibetan terrier.

The dogs were unkempt with matted fur, overgrown nails, skin infections and severe dental disease, an SPCA news release stated. Some of the dogs may be pregnant and alll are currently in SPCA care receiving veterinary treatment.

“This is yet another example of why regulations for dog (and cat) breeders are needed in this province,” said Marcie Moriarty, chief prevention and enforcement officer for the BC SPCA. “We have been working with the B.C. government on developing laws that we hope will help avoid these types of cases in the future.”

Charges of animal cruelty may be recommended in the case, according to the SPCA.

No further details can be given because the investigation is ongoing. The dogs, which are at the West Vancouver SPCA shelter for now, are not available for adoption at this time.
