Don’t blaze and drive and no pot for kids

Province begins debate on marijuana regulations

No blazing while driving, and no giving reefer to kids — those are some of the rules the province is proposing for its Cannabis Control and Licensing Act.

On April 26, the government started debating legislation that would establish provincial control over the sale, supply and possession of non-medical cannabis.

“This marks a major milestone, and puts our province in position to not only be ready for federal cannabis legalization in late summer, but does so in a way that reflects the Province’s goals for legalized cannabis that prioritize public health and safety, particularly for our children and youth,” said Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth in news release published on April 26.

It also establishes licensing of private cannabis retailers, including registration and training requirements for those who will work in cannabis retail.

The Cannabis Control and Licensing Act would also put in place prohibitions on the drug for minors.

Furthermore, there will be a ban on open pot in cars — that is, marijuana that’s had it’s packaging opened.
