DOS adds day camps in response to strike

Superintendent urges parents to make 'alternate arrangements' during teachers' walkout

District of Squamish recreation department officials are offering extra day camps early next week in response to the planned province-wide teachers' strike.

Classes at public schools in the Sea to Sky District, including those in Squamish, will not be in session during the three-day walkout Monday through Wednesday (March 5 to 7), though some administrative staff will be at the schools to oversee any emergent issues, district Superintendent Lisa McCullough said in an advisory issued to parents on Thursday (March 2).

On Friday (March 3), McCullough clarified the schools' situation in an updated advisory.

While school facilities will remain open under the direction of school district administrative staff, we will be unable to provide students with instruction or guarantee appropriate levels of supervision during these three days, McCullough wrote. It is, therefore, strongly recommended that parents keep their children at home or make alternate arrangements for them for the three days.

District of Squamish (DOS) officials, though, sought to provide an option for parents by offering day camps for school-aged children during school hours at Brennan Park Recreation Centre. The camps, which will be similar to our Pro D [professional development] day programs, will be offered Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 8:45 to 4 p.m. each day, officials wrote in an advisory to schools.

Space is limited. Those with questions may visit the DOS website at www.squamish.ca for details.
