Squamish RCMP are keeping their eyes on a spike of break-ins in the downtown core.
Last week, police attended a number of incidents on Cleveland Avenue and at the portables behind Howe Sound Secondary School, RCMP Sgt. Brian Cumming said.
We haven't really put an enforcement team strategy into place yet, but we are talking about the trend, he said.
Police are looking into the crime spree, which included thefts from Squamish Integrated Health, Sears and Kaos Kids, Cumming said.
A computer was stolen from the therapy clinic, Integrated Health owner and Squamish councillor Susan Chapelle said. It's not the first time her business has been targeted, she noted.
Before moving into the new Cornerstone building, the health care centre experienced multiple break-ins at previous locations. However, there's been a long crime-free period, until the incident mid-month, Chapelle said.
Break-ins will occur regardless of the community, so businesses and citizens need to help each other out, she said. The clinic's window was smashed at 9 p.m., the alarm went off and nobody called the police. RCMP were informed by the alarm company and arrived half an hour later, Chapelle noted.
In the [security] videos, you can see cars driving by, she said.
Police have a good idea of who the suspect is, Chapelle said. It only takes a few people to perpetrate a lot of damage, she said.
