Downtown street trees vandalized

'Unfortunate event' prompts call for those with information to come forward

Four street trees recently planted by the District of Squamish along Victoria Street in the downtown core were vandalized last week.

On Saturday (Aug. 25) at around 1:30 a.m., Squamish RCMP received a report that a group of males was damaging the trees, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said on Wednesday (Aug. 29). By the time police arrived, though, no one was around, he said.

DOS workers this week cleaned up the damaged trees, placing sheathing around what's left of the trees' trunks. No damage estimate was available.

The vandalism that occurred early Saturday morning is an isolated and unfortunate event, one that hopefully will not be repeated, Acting Mayor Ron Sander said in a statement issued on Wednesday. The District of Squamish is committed to the beautification of downtown and its continuous improvement. We encourage anyone who may have witnessed this act of vandalism to contact Crime Stoppers or the Squamish RCMP.

Police are investigating the matter. Those with information are asked to contact Squamish RCMP at (604) 898-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-222-8477.
