Squamish Coun. Susan Chapelle aims to dish up conversation on fast food drive-throughs in 2013.
Last month, her motion to delve into the community's food arena was backed by council. This year, officials will discuss policy changes in the Official Community Plan and zoning bylaw, so that staff can conduct the necessary research to consider policy amendments in 2013. Officials will examine drive-through businesses, stand-alone fast food restaurants and food security.
The motion comes after council adopted zoning amendments clearing the way for the development of a second Tim Hortons in Squamish. Although the drive-through itself met zoning requirements, the idea of adding a fast-food joint to the community's list of eateries split council.
At the time, Chapelle said she has nothing against chains because they're locally owned; however, drive-throughs don't fit with Squamish's image.
I believe that we need to have a policy that respects healthy living, she said.
When Garibaldi Village Shopping Centre was constructed, Chapelle said she was under the impression that it was to be the last of strip development along the highway. Numerous studies state that such highway-focused planning negatively affects downtown communities, she noted.
No date has been set for council to discuss the issue.
