Drive-thru plans for Britannia Beach development scrapped

The decision arrives after residents complained about the proposal

A White Spot in Richmond, B.C. Macdonald Development had previously considered adding a drive-thru to its Britannia Beach project, though local opposition has made the company scrap that plan.

Macdonald Development has decided to throw out its plans for a drive-thru in Britannia Beach after residents voiced their opposition to the idea in a recent public information meeting.

“There is no intention to have a drive-thru,” said project manager Bill Baker.

Baker added that the company has informed the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District of its decision to remove a drive-thru restaurant from the development application.

The decision stems from a recent public information meeting where locals declared that they didn’t want the community to become a stop on the highway.

While company owner Robert Macdonald noted he had considered the idea of having a White Spot drive-thru in the development, he said that if the community was dead-set against the restaurant, he would listen.

Shortly after Macdonald’s assurances at the meeting, residents circulated an online petition on Change.org calling for a ban on drive-thru restaurants in the area, among other things.

The petition has gathered 137 signatures as of press time.

The company is proposing to remake the area in front of the mining museum into 87 units of townhouses, rental and commercial space.
