May 10 is National Prescription Drop-off Day in Canada.

Local MP John Weston and Steve Blaney, Canada’s Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, this week urged Canadians to participate in National Prescription Drop-off Day on May 10.

The day, hosted by the Canadian Association of Police Chiefs, is an opportunity for Canadians to drop off unused and expired drugs to police and community partners to ensure safe disposal. Its aim is to reduce the volume of prescription drugs available for misuse and inform the public of the harms associated with prescription drug abuse.

It also reminds people that unused prescription drugs can be returned to local pharmacies for disposal any day of the year. Weston sponsored the bill in the House of Commons.

“The abuse of prescription drugs is a serious public health and safety issue that impacts individuals, families and communities across Canada,” Blaney said in a statement.
