Drunk teens stir up trouble

Over the past week, police and residents have had to contend with numerous incidents linked to inebriated teens.

On May 21 at 8:42 a.m., a resident reports damage to a vehicle on Brennan Road. Two side windows were smashed out the vehicle in an act of vandalism. There was no theft or attempted theft from the vehicle. Area residents reported a large number of teenagers in and around the area and at Fisherman's Park.

Other reports of senseless mischief and damage to property on Judd Road, Eagle Run and Tantalus Road that evening have police attributing the acts to partying teenagers reported to be in the area. Police believe alcohol is a contributing factor. Information was received that some youths believed to be 14 to 16 years old were dropped off in the area by adults, and were seen exiting vehicles carrying alcohol with them. Police will be monitoring these actions and remind the public that supplying or selling liquor to a minor will result in a court appearance, record on conviction, and carries a maximum penalty of six months in jail and/or a $2,000 fine. Being a minor in possession of liquor carries a $230 penalty.

Vandalism on Skyline

On May 22 at 3:39 a.m., members on patrol noticed two vehicles with smashed windows on Skyline Drive at Skyline Place. A group of youths had been in the area when the residents heard the vandalism occurring. Patrols failed to locate those responsible, however police allege a connection between the youths and alcohol.

Vehicle destroyed by fire

On May 22, a resident reports his vehicle was stolen from a driveway on Lanark Place at Friedel Crescent. The vehicle was parked overnight and noticed missing in the morning. On May 22 at 2:16 a.m., members were dispatched to a reported large bonfire on Mamquam Road at Village Drive. Attending officers observed skid marks where a vehicle had left the roadway, which was in fact the 2004 Grey GMC Sierra that was reported stolen earlier. It was found driven off the road, set on fire and completely destroyed.

On May 21 at 11:18 p.m., members on patrol came upon an intoxicated youth staggering along Government Road near Harris Road. The 17-year-old youth was found to be heavily intoxicated and unable to care for himself. He was arrested for being intoxicated in public. A search of the youth revealed a scale with marijuana residue on it which was seized. The youth was held in custody overnight and released to the care of a parent in the morning with a violation ticket for being intoxicated in public which carries a penalty of $115.

On May 22 at 1:10 a.m., a member responded to assist members attending a large gathering of youths on the dike behind the dog pound. While en route the member came upon a young female being carried by two young men. The 15-year-old female was unable to stand, and was highly intoxicated. The female was held and monitored in cells as her mother was in Alberta. She was later released to the care of her brother, after being issued with a violation ticket.

Teen speeder crashes

On May 24 at 11:35 p.m. police, fire, ambulance and BC Hydro crews attended to a collision on Guilford Drive and Alder when an Audi sportscar had lost control. The Audi was travelling west on Guilford Drive at a high rate of speed when its 16-year-old driver lost control. The vehicle struck a parked car and then a power pole and landed on a lawn. The power pole flew through the air striking a parked truck. The parked vehicle struck was propelled forward into a parked van. The driver had to be removed from the vehicle using the jaws of life, and was transferred to Lions Gate Hospital for surgery. The 15-year-old passenger was treated and released. The matter is still under investigation and charges are pending against the driver. The collision is clearly a result of excessive and dangerous speed within a residential neighborhood.

Firearms retrieved

May 23 at 7:12 p.m. police were called to a residence on Plateau Crescent after a verbal argument turned physical. A male and female met members outside the residence and a 49-year-old female had allegedly been in possession of a firearm and remained in the residence. The female was arrested at the residence and held in custody, appearing in court on May 25th and is charged with Possession of a Weapon, Uttering Threats and Assault and was released on conditions and will be in court on June 2 for her next appearance. A total of four firearms were seized from the residence.

Adventure Centre broken-into

On May 20 at 9:35 p.m., an ATM alarm was triggered at the Adventure Center on Loggers Lane. Entry was gained through a smashed window on the northwest side of the building. Suspect(s) attempted to pry open the ATM, however, were unsuccessful.

Diner vandalized

On Friday (May 21) at 7:34 a.m., a business reports that overnight suspects had thrown rocks through various windows at the Red Bench Diner in Brackendale. No entry was gained, however one of the rocks struck and damaged a toilet inside the restaurant.

Drunk driver crashes

On Sunday (May 23) at 2:44 a.m., a collision occurred in the parking lot of McDonald's Restaurant. Upon attendance police located a highly intoxicated male screaming, and punching and kicking his vehicle, refusing to settle down. The 35-year-old male was arrested. A 32-year-old female had driven the wrong way through the parking lot and struck another vehicle. The female driver failed a roadside screening test, was returned to the detachment and supplied two breath samples nearly three times the legal limit. The driver was later released to appear in court on July 7 to answer to an impaired driving charge. The 35-year-old male was held in custody until sober and released

Drunk driver stopped

On Saturday (May 22) at 12:11 a.m., a member on patrol conducting a check stop on Government Road stopped a white Plymouth and upon talking with the driver determined the 52-year-old male had been drinking and failed a roadside screening for alcohol. The driver was returned to the detachment were two breathalyzer tests read over three times the legal limit. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 24 hours. The driver's licence was suspended and the driver was released to appear in court on June 30 to answer to an impaired driving charge.

Home broken into

On May 22 suspect(s) entered a house on Ayr Drive by breaking a sliding glass door at ground level at the rear of the residence and stole a substantial amount of tools worth $5,000. Once an inventory list of the tools is submitted, they will be entered onto the police data base and will be tracked if they are sold or pawned.

Gas station broken into

On Monday (May 24) at 2:07 a.m., a member attended an alarm at the Shell Service Station on Highway 99 and observed a piece of concrete had been thrown through a window. Video surveillance shows a young adult male, lean and clean shaved head attempting to steal cigarettes. He was unsuccessful so stole rolling papers and a drink and fled the store. A police service dog team unsuccessfully attempted to track the suspect. The male is identifiable on video.

Motorcycle stolen

On Thursday May 20, a resident reports that over the past week suspect(s) stole a 1993 Kawasaki KX125 Motorcycle valued at $1,000, which was chained underneath a rear patio at a residence on Buckley Avenue.

Careless driver fined

On Thursday May 20 at 1:38 p.m. police, fire and ambulance attended to a single vehicle roll over collision on the Old Government Road off of Bailey Street. A 1998 GMC pick up truck driven by a 28-year-old male lost control and rolled over, the driver was transported to hospital for treatment of injuries and later released. It was evident that the vehicle had been fishtailing prior to the roll over and speed relative to conditions is believed to be a contributing factor. The driver was issued with a violation ticket for driving without due care and attention.
