Duplexes being built downtown & more news briefs

This week's news briefs
From developments to upgrades, there is a lot slated for downtown Squamish.

New duplexes could soon be under construction downtown.

After a brief public hearing at council Tuesday, council passed third reading of a rezoning bylaw that paves the way for four duplexes on four square lots at the corner of Main Street and Third Avenue.

Two speakers at the public hearing mentioned concern over potentially lost sightlines and increased traffic in the area.

First and second readings were passed at council March 15.

The applicant agreed to donate the sitka spruce tree located onsite for a community use, according to district staff.

North Yards project hearing

A public hearing has been scheduled for May 3 for the proposed mixed-use Breeze Townhouse housing and commercial development slated for the North Yards. Rezoning for the development passed its first two readings Tuesday night at council.  The proposal is for 59, three-storey townhouse units, 12 apartments, eight live-work units, commercial space and a childcare facility for up to 20 children.

Six of the live-work units would be rentals and the townhomes would have rooftop decks, according to district staff.

A traffic study will be done prior to the public hearing, staff said.

The proponent, Target Homes Real Estate, will contribute $572,000 in a community amenity contribution, staff said.  The public hearing is planned for May 3 at 6 p.m. at Municipal Hall.

Cleveland to get spiffy

Downtown will soon be undergoing a beautification.

At its meeting Tuesday night, council accepted tender from Lionsgate Excavating and Demolition for $438,405 to upgrade Cleveland Avenue’s streetscape. District staff said they hope to soon begin the work, which would take about eight weeks to complete. Streetscapes include the roads and sidewalks.

Pitch-In Week

It’s almost time for Squamish’s community cleanup. Residents are encouraged to collect garbage on their local street or area April 17 to 23. The district will provide bags and gloves, and tipping fees will be waived.

As part of the national event, a 20-Minute Makeover will be held outside at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 21. Residents are encouraged to stop and spend 20 minutes picking up garbage wherever they see it. For more details and to register go to Squamish.ca. Squamish’s Re-Use It Fair, however has been cancelled for 2016. The annual swap has been postponed until 2017 due to lack of available venue, according to the district, but household items can still be donated at several locations.

Downtown AGM

The Downtown Squamish Business Improvement Association is holding its annual general meeting on Thursday, April 21 starting at 6 p.m. at the Ledge Café. Devon Guest, the district’s film and events manager, is scheduled to be the keynote speaker.  The evening’s agenda will also include a review of the budget and nominations for board positions. Anyone who owns land or a business within the downtown catchment can run for the board. To RSVP, email [email protected].
