Farmers' Institute unit vandalized

Sign spray-painted; public's help sought in preventing future mischief

Vandals have spray-painted a sign on the front of a storage container owned by the Brackendale Farmers Institute (BFI), and the group's leaders are seeking the public's help in prevent similar incidents in the future.

Thor Froslev, BFI board member and owner of the nearby Brackendale Art Gallery, said he first noticed the damage during a walk through the Brackendale Farmers Park late Sunday (July 10). He said someone had used brown latex paint to paint over the yellow sign depicting the BFI logo on the front of the container the group uses to store equipment near the park entrance off of Government Road.

"It looked like two eyes," Froslev said of the figure painted on the sign.

This isn't the first time BFI-owned equipment has been vandalized in the park. A couple of years ago, someone pried open a door on the large metal storage container and attempted to set the contents on fire. A lawn mower was destroyed and a tractor used to perform hayrides during the popular Brackendale Fall Fair was damaged.

Since then, the BFI has installed lights near the entrance to the park, a move Froslev said has likely helped prevent further vandalism. But the group is hoping anyone who witnesses suspicious activity will phone Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 and report it, he said.
