Fast for Haiti

The World Vision 30-Hour Famine is once again recruiting local youth and raising funds to help the world most disenfranchised.

The World Vision 30-Hour Famine is once again recruiting local youth and raising funds to help the world most disenfranchised.

Last year, Squamish residents helped local youth famine groups raise more than $2,714 to help support World Vision's on-going efforts to eradicate hunger, poverty and injustice around the world.

This year's focus is on relief for Haitian earthquake victims. In January, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Port-au-Prince, Haiti, destroying homes and affecting millions of Haitians. It is estimated that more than 200,000 Haitians were killed during the quake and millions have been left homeless. Many of Squamish's youth want to do something to help. Locals who want to get involved can join more than 100,000 Canadian youth participating in the World Vision 30 Hour Famine on April 16.

"By doing the famine, youth go without food for 30 hours and learn about issues resulting from poverty in order to better understand what the worlds most vulnerable go through on a daily basis," according to a World Vision news release.

The goal this year is to raise $5 million.
