A 54 year old male from the Lower Mainland is dead following a gruesome crash that closed the Sea to Sky Highway from Alice Lake to Function Junction on Sunday (Jan. 29) morning.
A 19-year-old male driver from Calgary is being investigated for Impaired Driving by Drug. It is alleged that his newer model Dodge pick up truck crossed the centre line northbound on the Sea to Sky Highway, crashing into a southbound limousine killing the lone occupant driver, a 54 year old male from the Lower Mainland after the limousine exploded and was engulfed in flames.
"This is a terrible tragedy that resulted in the death of an innocent driver," said Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the Lower Mainland District RCMP in a release. The family of the deceased victim has been affected for a lifetime and will never be the same.
The next of kin notification is still in the process of being completed and as a result the victim's identity has not yet been released. The 19 year old male driver sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local area hospital pending further investigation.
The crash, which occurred just before midnight on Saturday (Jan. 28), closed a 40-kilometre stretch of the highway from Alice Lake to Function Junction. The highway was re-opened at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday.
The incident is under investigation by Whistler and Squamish RCMP along with Lower Mainland District Traffic Services and the Integrated Collision Analysis Reconstruction Service (ICARS).
