Federal election candidates' forum set

Chamber, Chief to host event next Wednesday

With the May 2 federal election a little more than three weeks away, Squamish voters pondering how to cast their ballots may wonder where the candidates stand on issues that most concern them. Or perhaps some are just looking to become more engaged in the political process.

Have no fear. The Chief and the Squamish Chamber of Commerce have teamed up to organize an all-candidates' forum next Wednesday (April 13) at 7 p.m. at the Sea to Sky Hotel, where citizens can hear those seeking to represent West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country in Ottawa provide their thoughts on the issues facing the riding. Citizens will also have a chance to pose their own questions.

Former Chief editor John French will serve as moderator at the event. So far, four candidates have confirmed their attendance: incumbent Conservative John Weston, Liberal Dan Veniez, New Democrat Terry Platt and Green Party hopeful Brennan Wauters. Allan Holt, who this week declared his candidacy under the Western Block Party banner (see article on page A12), had yet to confirm his attendance by press time.

As well, the four Glacier Media newspapers in the riding - the Chief, the Coast Reporter, the Powell River Peak and the Whistler Question - are seeking the candidates' responses to a series of questions in the weeks leading up to election day. For the first installment, turn to page A13.
