The proposal for a liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing and export facility on the site of the former Woodfibre pulp mill must undergo a full federal environmental review, officials have determined.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) made the determination on Friday (Jan. 31). In December, CEAA officials opened up a 20-day period for comments on the question of whether a full federal assessment should be required or whether portions of the provincial review could be substituted for the federal one.
The decision to order a full federal review was based on the description provided by the proponent, Woodfibre Natural Gas, the possibility that "the carrying out of the project may cause adverse environmental effects" and comments received from the public, the order stated.
This week, Woodfibre Natural Gas officials began a series of small-group meetings and open houses to discuss the proposal. Small-group meetings are planned today (Feb. 6) in Squamish and next Wednesday (Feb. 12) in Britannia Beach. To RSVP for those meetings, email [email protected] or call 1-888-801-7929.
