More secondary suites are now likely to be constructed within homes in Squamish. Council passed third reading of the fees and charges bylaw Tuesday night. From Jan. 20, 2016, to Jan. 31, 2017, building permit fees will be waived for the construction and alteration to a secondary site or accessory residential dwelling.

The waiving of the fees came out of a district housing task force recommendation, according to Councillor Jason Blackman-Wulff, chair of the task force, in order to encourage more affordable housing options for renters in Squamish. The bylaw still has to be adopted at a future council meeting.
