Fire guts Brackendale home

Cause of long weekend blaze under investigation

A Brackendale home sustained extensive damage in a fire that occurred on the long weekend.

Squamish Fire Rescue Services (SFRS) received the first call about a blaze at the home on Bracken Park Way on Saturday (May 18) at 5:31 p.m., SFRS Chief Russ Inouye told The Chief on Tuesday (May 21).

The occupants of the manufactured home were not present at the time of the blaze, he said.

When fire crews arrived, about 50 per cent of the structure was involved in flames. Firefighters' initial attack was a defensive one, he said: That means we're initially going in to protect the exposures so that it doesn't spread beyond the house of origin.

Once the fire was under control, we moved cautiously to the inside, Inouye added.

Neighbour Louise Prevost said she was baking in her kitchen when she started to hear sirens outdoors. When she turned to look out the window, I could see flames shooting up into the sky and black, billowing plumes of smoke, she said.

After seeing the damage to the home, I just felt devastated for those people, Prevost said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but it is not considered suspicious, Inouye said. The home's occupants told SFRS officials that they did have insurance on the home, he said.
