Fire scorches Nexen Beach

News

Firefighters converged on Nexen Beach Saturday (June 4) to put out a fire that torched part of Squamish's new oceanfront playground.

Firefighters were dispatched to the beach at 8 a.m., according to firefighter Bob Fulton, and smoke was seen from downtown and Hospital Hill.

Fulton said it took two hours to extinguish the fire.

He estimated the flames torched an area about 18.6 square metres (200 square feet), which included logs and stumps on the beach.

Fulton said a fire originating at the beach could pose a danger to Squamish if a dry wind blew the flames toward downtown. Fulton said he believes someone lit a campfire and didn't do a good job of putting it out. He said fires are not permitted at the beach and campfires are only allowed on private property and at organized camp areas. Fulton said anyone who plans on building a campfire should make sure it is completely out before leaving the site.

Student hurt at unsanctioned grad party

Police were called to Lucille Lake after receiving a report indicating someone was stabbed in the face at an outdoor party.

Cpl. Dave Ritchie of the RCMP said the complaint came in at 9:19 p.m. on Friday (June 3).

An 18-year-old male suffered lacerations to his face. Ritchie said alcohol was a factor leading to the injuries and from the RCMP's initial investigation it wasn't clear if the wounds were from an attack or an accident.

The victim was taken to hospital and later released with several stitches.

Ritchie said the victim was intoxicated as was the girl who called for help. Ritchie added that a male friend was drunk and quite combative.

The police questioned a number of young people at the scene and Ritchie said health professionals who treated the victim would be questioned to determine how the injuries were received.
