Food on every table is the goal

Sea to Sky Community Services, in conjunction with Vancouver Coastal Health, are inviting all members of the community with a stake in keeping food on the table to a series of meetings in the Sea to Sky corridor.

"Putting food on the table is everybody's issue," said Lydia Szymanski, a Sea to Sky Community Services worker and organizer of the community event. "This will be an opportunity to discuss food accessibility in the community."

Squamish will be hosting the first meeting at the Squamish United Church on Wednesday (May 17) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Szymanski is inviting everyone in the community to come and discuss the issue of food.

"With rising gas prices, the closure of the [Woodfibre] mill, and the rising cost of food, more and more people are having difficulty making ends meet. From the discussions we will be able to offer ideas on how to improve the services of food banks in the community," she said. "It is a opportunity to get ideas from people who use the service as well."

Szymanski is clear the meetings are not designed to criticize the work of existing food banks, rather the goal will be to improve existing services.

Interested parties are asked to RSVP by Monday (May 15) by calling 604-892-5796 or emailing [email protected]. Childcare and transportation can also be provided.
