Renowned Canadian painter Halin de Repentigny is coming to town.
Beginning Wednesday (Sept. 19), the Montreal native's work was to be on display at the Portico Gallery.
"The focus will be on paintings from the Yukon, from Patagonia and from Vancouver and the B.C. coast," de Repentigny said in a statement. "I'm struck by the similarities of these places and also inspired by their differences."
De Repentigny started painting at the age of six. By 10, he was dabbling with oils. Five years later, de Repentigny's piece hung on the walls of galleries and cafés.
De Repentigny dreamed of becoming a trapper. In 1981, with only a backpack, skinning tools and rifle, he headed to the Yukon. The experience marked a beginning in his artistic career.
De Repentigny's work is also being shown in Calgary at the Gainsborough Gallery. The annual event, Masterpieces Group Exhibition, showcases 15 of the gallery's finest artists.
An opening reception for the Squamish exhibit will be held tonight (Sept. 20) from 6 to 9 p.m. The Portico Gallery, at the corner of 2nd and Pemberton, is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. for more information visit www.porticogallery.ca.
