A decision is expected next week from the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) regarding the proposed Garibaldi at Squamish resort.

The province’s EAO’s referral to ministers for the project was on Dec. 16, according to provincial ministry of environment spokesman David Karn, and as is subject to the 45-day timeline in the legislation.

Therefore, a decision is expected by Monday (Feb. 1).

The $3.5-billion, 22,000-bed project including a ski hill, restaurants and trails is proposed for Brohm Ridge. Developers want the land to be amalgamated into the District of Squamish.

Last month, district council reiterated its opposition to the project. Council’s concerns include water supply and wildlife habitat; that the project does not meet the district’s smart growth and sustainable land-use plans; and the size, scale and layout of the resort proposal.

A Garibaldi at Squamish economic fact sheet showed close to 6,000 new jobs and $50 million in additional tax revenue would be created by the project.
