Gas leak shuts down Government Road

Construction accident suspected in pipeline damage

The odour of natural gas is wafting through the Elements residential complex on Government Road this morning after construction crews apparently broke through a buried pipeline while operating a backhoe at the entrance to the complex.

Evacuations were not necessary, however RCMP and Squamish Fire Rescue have blocked the portion of Government Road leading the Elements, according to deputy fire chief Mike Adams.

"There's been no properties impacted," said Adams. "The two buildings adjacent to the gas leak are unoccupied. So we're just making sure people stay back."

Squamish Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance are on standby as Terasen crews attempted to determine how to stop the leak. Traffic will be rerouted until at least the afternoon as North Vancouver Terasen workers travel to the area to help.

But at the moment, rescue workers are saying there's no cause for alarm.

"The gas seems to be dissipating into the atmosphere with no wind," said Adams. "We are monitoring the atmosphere to ensure that there's no further concerns for evacuation.
