Get chipping with the Scouts

Those beautiful, fresh Christmas trees that adorned your home in December are probably sitting in your backyard to be disposed of. Scouts Canada is offering a chipping service for those trees on Sunday (Jan. 7) at the Garden Centre.

Scouts Canada is offering a chipping service for those trees on Sunday (Jan. 7) at the Garden Centre. Your donations to the Scouts would be much appreciated. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Venturers will also be canvassing your neighbourhood on Sunday during their annual Bottle Drive.



The 21st annual Brackendale Eagle Count will be held on Sunday (Jan. 7) with counters arriving at the Brackendale Art Gallery at 8 a.m. in preparation for the start of the count at 9 a.m. A public tour of the areas the eagles gather will begin at 10 a.m. from the BAG. Thor Froslev said in viewing the areas the eagles frequent, he expects the count to be somewhat higher this year.



Stick around the BAG after the official eagle count is given for the monthly GrassRoots Jam on Sunday starting at 7:30 to 10 p.m. It's a great time for musicians and also for the audience as they can participate too.



Registration by phone or in person starts on Monday (Jan. 8) at 1 p.m. at the Squamish Public Library for storytimes. Programs for babies, toddlers and preschoolers will start on Monday, Jan. 15. Don't forget to pop in for Family Storytime where children of all ages and their caregivers participate in stories, rhymes and songs. These drop-in sessions start up again on Wednesday, Jan. 17 from 1:30 to 2 p.m. No registration is necessary.



Teens are invited to join the Teen Book Club at the Squamish Library and to sign out the book Luna by Julianne Peters. The group will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 23 at 6:30 p.m. and pizza and pop is provided. Parents/guardians of preschoolers and toddlers might like to check out the variety of programs offered for these youngsters at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre. Little Sneakers Gym for one to five year-olds starts next week, Hand in Hand for 18 months to three years gives toddlers a head start on Preschool when they are introduced to the Tot Time playroom with mom or dad. Gymnastics for school age and youth begins next week and there is more information on these programs on page 12 of the new Winter 2007 brochure. The Seniors Keep Well exercise program resumes at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre's gymnasium on Monday (Jan. 8) and each Monday and Wednesday starting at 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. until April 4. Please note the new starting time. Sacha Molby puts us through our paces in a fun-filled atmosphere. The cost for 24 classes is just $12.72.



A two-day Land, Sea, Sky and Thread workshop facilitated by Marg Marlow will be held in the Sea to Sky Hotel on Friday, Feb. 23 and Saturday Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Learn the basics of guitar including tuning, strumming, beginner chords and how to put it all together and complete songs, Paul Madigan is the instructor and classes will be held in the junior lounge at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre starting Wednesday, Jan 25 and each week to March 1.



The Hearts in Motion Walking club is looking forward to another year of getting out in the sunshine (and rain and snow of course) this year and we are always looking for new members. We meet each Friday at 9:30 a.m. and on Friday, Jan. 12 we will meet at the Tantalus Seniors' Centre for a 40 to 45 minute walk followed by coffee and socializing.
