Getting ready to pitch in

Squamish residents will have a chance next month to help clean up and beautify their community during the 20th edition of Spring Pitch-In Week.

Squamish residents will have a chance next month to help clean up and beautify their community during the 20th edition of Spring Pitch-In Week.

"We're encouraging schools, neighbourhoods, businesses, and community organizations to get together and take on some kind of clean-up project, whether it be a park or a street or a workplace" said John French of Carney Waste Systems during Tuesday's (March 27) district council meeting.

"We ask that the groups register with District of Squamish, and by registering you'll be able to get bags for your group, free gloves, and if you're in a high-risk area you can also get a containment box for collecting needles," said French.

Council agreed to officially declare Pitch-In Week, but not before French challenged council to form its own group to go out and do a clean-up, presenting councillors with a special gift - garbage bags.

"We'll beat anybody in the clean-up," said Mayor Ian Sutherland, in response to French's announcement that the organizing committee is considering creating a friendly competition between clean-up groups.

So far there are approximately ten groups registered for Pitch-In in Squamish.

"They're all ready to go with projects, and we're definitely expecting more groups to come forward,' said French.

The district's "Free dump Days" are scheduled for April 28 and 29 this year. Residents unable to attend the free landfill disposal days are asked to make other arrangements by calling the district's operations department at 604 815-6868.Pitch-In Week is a national program that is also supported by the BC government and challenges communities to assist in cleaning up their streets, ditches, and parks.

Interested groups are asked to stop by the District of Squamish office on Second Avenue to register their group and to go over their selected project.
