Local public school officials are seeking input on a shift that would see all Squamish Grade 7 students moved from elementary schools to Don Ross Secondary School in future years.
The Sea to Sky School District board of trustees has been asked to consider the change and is seeking input from parents, guardians and school staff before making a decision, Peter Jory, the district's director of instruction for technology and innovation, wrote in an email to schools.
Since a realignment in 2010 moved all Grade 10s in Squamish to Howe Sound Secondary School, Don Ross has housed classes for Grades 8 and 9 only. It currently has about 350 students and has space for another cohort of students, officials said. Grade 7 classes currently take place at Squamish's six elementary schools.
The public is invited to a meeting on Tuesday (Oct. 22) at 7 p.m. At the meeting, Don Ross Principal Nick Pascuzzi will present information about the middle years programming at Don Ross, Jory wrote. There will also be a tour of the school and a chance to ask questions of district staff, he said.
From Wednesday (Oct. 23) to Nov. 5, those with an interest in the topic will be asked to complete a survey. Surveys will be emailed out to parents, guardians and others, or paper surveys will be available at the schools, Jory said.
