Grease is the word Saturday

Anyone who saw and enjoyed the movie Grease will be able to go back to that era when the Sea to Sky Singers hold a Grease Extravaganza tomorrow night (Sept. 17) at the Howe Sound Secondary School. Dress up in 1950s greaser style or just go along and join in the fun. It all begins at 5 p.m. and includes food, penny carnival games, a dunk tank, a chance to sing karaoke and see the movie Grease. A family sock hop will end the evening of fun and reminiscing. Tickets at $10 each are available at Billie's Bouquet, Highland Video, Mostly Books and at the door. The first 100 people through the door will receive a free gift bag of Grease goodies.



New choir members are always welcome to join the Sea to Sky Singers and rehearsals are held each Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Squamish Baptist Church. The choir will present a Christmas show on Saturday, Dec. 3. For more information, please call the director, Veronica McPhee, at 604-892-7819.



This is the weekend (Sept. 17 and Sept 18) for the annual Squamish Valley ArtWalk 2005 Studio & Gallery Tour. This is a time when local artists display their works in local galleries, in studios and in their homes and you are invited to peruse the many locations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. each day. Guidebooks are available at the Squamish Public Library, Karen's Kitchen, Pause Café, The Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Company, Brackendale Art Gallery and at the Mountain Retreat Hotel.



The Squamish Environmental Conservation Society invites one and all to take part in an Estuary Walk. Please meet in front of the Howe Sound Inn at 1 p.m. With the seasons starting to change, this is a beautiful time of the year to enjoy the estuary. The guided walk will be approximately two hours long. Wear good walking shoes (trails are flat but some are a bit rough) and dress for the weather. Remember to take along your binoculars! All ages are welcome.



The Vancouver-based Westcoast Harmony Chorus will be in Squamish this weekend. The 75-member women's a cappella chorus will be rehearsing for an upcoming international competition in Las Vegas, Nev. At 4 p.m. tomorrow (Sept. 17) the Westcoast Harmony Chorus and host hotel, the Sea to Sky Hotel will give a free public performance at 4 p.m. The public is invited to listen and watch, then meet the members of the choir at 4:30 p.m.



Todd Major, one of the most knowledgeable horticulturists in the Lower Mainland, will be the guest speaker of the Squamish Gardeners at the Squamish Public Library at 7 p.m. on Monday (Sept. 19). He is currently Manager of Parks Projects for the City of Port Coquitlam. He will demonstrate on how to utilize readily available plants at the nursery to enjoy throughout the winter. A $2 admission for non-members and $1 for members gives you a chance to win the door prize.



The Sea to Sky Community Services Society will hold its annual general meeting on Monday (Sept. 19) starting with an open house from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The AGM will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Consider becoming a member of the SSCS Society for a membership fee of $5.



All women are invited to attend the Howe Sound Women's Centre Society's annual general meeting on Wednesday (Sept. 21) at the Squamish Public Library. It begins with a potluck dinner at 5 p.m., followed by the AGM at 6:30 p.m. and guest speakers at 7:30 p.m. The theme is Beyond Squamish: Women & Culture. The moderator, Theodora Carroll, is the author of Women, Religion & Development. Guest speakers include Zia Afsar on Sharia law, Nina Biln on Sikh and Hindu religions and Carol Harry will speak on First Nations customs and spirituality. Hilltop House has seven residents celebrating birthdays this month. Those to be honoured on Wednesday (Sept. 21) at 2 p.m. include Howard Brown, Michael Nagy-Deak, Alexander Allan, Dorothy Zimmerman, Edith Penn, Worden Ofstie and Kay Calder.



The Vancouver Coastal Health Authority is sponsoring a new fitness program for seniors in Squamish and the program will be held at the Squamish Public Library on Tuesdays at the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Thursdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. and will run from Sept. 27 to Dec. 15. A free introductory class will be held on Thursday (Sept. 22) at BPRC. The registration fee for all classes from September to December is $5. The Rocky Horror Show has a couple of small roles available for singers and strong dancers (15 years and up) to be a part of the cast. To book an audition, please call Adriane Polo at 604-898-5930.



The Hearts in Motion Walking Club members will be meeting at the Squamish Elementary School on Friday, Sept. 23 at 9:30 a.m. for a walk to Tim Hortons and back. Tickets at $25 each are available for the Squamish Public Library's fundraiser, Books and Beer on Sept. 29 at the Eagle Eye Theatre. It features Gregg Potter, author of Backstage Vancouver and Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer Red Robinson. Pick up tickets at the Library, Mostly Books, Billlie's Bouquet and the Howe Sound Women's Centre.



The book The Forest Lover gives a powerful journey of the legendary painter, naturalist and icon Emily Carr. The book was chosen by the Adult Book Discussion group and if you have read the book, join them at the library on Wednesday (Sept. 21) from 12 noon to 1 p.m.



It is hard to believe it was 25 years ago that Terry Fox began his Marathon of Hope Run. As we know, he was not able to complete his run across Canada but his memory and legacy lives on in the annual Terry Fox Run. It is this Sunday (Sept. 18) and I am sure there is a run planned for our community.



Calculations Without Calculators is a new book by John Gilmour. His book launch will be at the Squamish Public Library on Saturday (Sept. 17) at 10:30 a.m. Join John in the meeting room, have some fun and test his system.
