Grenade found in garbage truck

On Friday (Aug. 13) at 10:17 a.m., a waste management worker in Lions Bay was emptying trash and located a grenade that appeared intact in the garbage truck. The area was secured, and a military bomb disposal unit was brought in from Victoria. The grenade, which held a charge, was deemed to be a practice grenade and was moved to a gravel pit and disposed of by detonation.

Bonfire builders fined

On Saturday (Aug. 14) at 9:10 p.m., members attended with the Squamish Fire Department to a large bonfire at a residence on Government Road. The bonfire was located in the backyard and three adults and one youth who were attending. It was extinguished and all four were issued violation tickets for using a fire during prohibition, which carries a penalty of $345.

Touring cyclist targetted

On Monday (Aug. 16) at 4:21 p.m., a cyclist reported that while cycling near Mile 23 of Squamish Valley Road, his bike was stolen after he laid it down on the roadside to drink from the river. The black Trek Fuel EX8 mountain bike and a tent in a blue bag were stolen and valued at $2,650. The matter is still under investigation.

Australians victims of theft

On Sunday (Aug. 15) at 4:31 p.m., Australian visitors reported their vehicle was broken into while they parked on Cleveland Avenue at Winnipeg Street to tour Squamish. Several items were stolen, including three cameras and bags, a laptop computer, prescription drugs, wallets and $1,500 in Canadian currency.

Parking meter broken into

On Wednesday Aug. 11 at 7:40 p.m., a BC Parks employee reported a parking meter for the Stump Lake lot was broken into. A torch was used to cut the locks and break into the meter.

Break in at Nexen Beach

On Tuesday Aug. 10, a vehicle owner reported a break in while at Nexen Beach. A wallet with identification, credit cards and cash was stolen along with an Apple iPod.

Rental vehicle broken into

On Thursday Aug. 12, a group of tourists report their rental vehicle was broken into while they were at Shannon Falls Park. Three wallets and purses, a laptop computer, sunglasses, clothing and cell phones were stolen.
