Two Vancouver men in their mid-20s were ticketed and had their high-end sports cars impounded in relation to an alleged street-racing incident this week along Highway 99 in Squamish.
On Monday (April 28) at around 11 a.m., Squamish RCMP received a report that two vehicles had been seen racing northbound on the highway, Corp. Robert McDonald of the RCMP E Division Traffic Services wrote in a statement.
The vehicles — a grey, 2014 Maserati and a black 2012 Ferrari — were seen travelling northbound at Garibaldi Way. The two were following each other at up to 140 km/h, extremely close to one another, and swerving in their lanes in a practice known as “warming up the tires,” McDonald said.
As soon as the lead driver saw an RCMP Traffic Services vehicle, both slammed on their brakes and reduced their speed to 80 km/h. The cars were stopped without incident and the drivers were ticketed for excessive speeding and had their vehicles impounded for 15 days.
“It’s scary to think that this dangerous and aggressive driving behaviour was occurring in the middle of the day when families are on the road and regular people are using our roadways responsibly for work and general travel,” McDonald said.
“Excessive and dangerous speed puts not only the driver of the speeding vehicle at risk, but puts every other vehicle that is sharing the road in danger as well. Speeding greatly reduces reaction and braking times, no matter what type of vehicle you are driving.”
