Highway 99 re-opens after fiery crash

One believed dead in single-vehicle incident south of Porteau Cove

Highway 99 was re-opened to traffic on Wednesday (Feb. 22) after having been closed for about three hours because of a single-vehicle crash just south of Porteau Cove.

Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in an email to The Chief that one occupant of the vehicle that crashed is believed to be deceased in the crash, which occurred in the northbound lanes of the highway just after 10:30 a.m.

The crash resulted in the vehicle catching fire, Mountain FM radio reported. The accident mostly affected the northbound lanes of the highway, but authorities also closed the southbound lanes to allow emergency crews and crash investigators full access to the site, the radio station reported.

While the highway was closed, southbound traffic was stopped about 500 metres south of the Porteau Road interchange, and those who wished to turn around and return to Squamish were being allowed to do so at a point where the highway median barrier ended. Northbound motorists told Mountain FM that they were being allowed to turn around before the crash scene as well.

As of 1:50 p.m., the southbound lanes of the highway were re-opened to traffic, while one lane of northbound traffic was re-opened, Pride said.

Stay tuned to The Chief for updates on this developing story.
