Highway crash claims life of 17-year-old Squamish driver

Police investigating cause of two-vehicle collision north of Alice Lake

A 17-year-old driver died in a two-vehicle collision on Highway 99, north of Alice Lake, on Monday night that shut down the road for hours.

Police said at about 10:45 p.m. on June 28, a car with three Squamish youth and a van with one occupant collided. The driver of the car died at the scene.

RCMP said Emergency Health Services transported the remaining people to hospital with unknown injuries.

“This is tragic for the families and our community. We have dedicated all the resources we have available to best support those involved and so that we can determine what happened,” said Cpl. Angela Kermer of the Squamish RCMP, in a news release.

The Integrated Collision and Reconstruction Service, or ICARS, was conducting an investigation on the scene for several hours, starting late Monday evening and going on into Tuesday morning.

During that time, the highway was shut down completely.

ICARS is called in to investigate cases of death or serious injury.

Local police are working with that team. Squamish RCMP’s General Investigation Section is in charge of the file.

Squamish RCMP victim services is providing support for anyone in need, and Squamish School District 48 has support resources available for all Squamish students.
