A man fell to his death on Saturday, Sept. 13 near Sky Pilot Mountain.

His name hasn’t been released but he was reportedly a 29-year-old who lived in Victoria.

R-C-M-P Inspector Konrad Golbeck said rescue crews rushed to Stadium Glacier where he fell, but the man died on the glacier.

Squamish Search and Rescue manager Katy Chambers said the man was wearing crampons and was hiking with a friend. She said the man slid about 300 metres (1,000 feet) down the glacier, hitting rocks on the way down.

“Another climbing team in the area who had a Spot device, witnessed it,” said Chambers. “They initiated their Spot device and about 10 minutes later the RCMP and Search and Rescue were contacted in Squamish.”

Yet another group of climbers in the area started CPR.

According to Chambers, the man and his hiking partner didn’t have very much experience using crampons.

The location of the incident is about a three-hour hike from the Sea to Sky Gondola summit. Trevor Dunn, the gondola general manager, said the man drove on a forestry road to reach the trailhead he used to access the backcountry trail to the base of Sky Pilot.

“We recommend that everybody that’s going up the gondola and interested in going out into the backcountry that they use a local experienced guide who is certified,” said Dunn.

He added that the Sea to Sky Gondola goes to great lengths to educate visitors about the risks and dangers of backcountry travel.

This incident follows a similar fatal fall in the same area back in July.

More information will be included in The Squamish Chief on Thursday.
