House intact after fire in Garibaldi Highlands

Family was away during blaze but neighbours evacuated

No one was injured in a house fire in Garibaldi Highlands that erupted at about 9 p.m. Monday night, according to the District of Squamish.

About 20 per cent of the house, which is located on a cul de sac, Pierowall Place, was involved in the blaze. A neighbour told The Squamish Chief the fire seemed to originate in the garage. Despite smoke and water damage, the majority of the house remains intact, said a district spokesperson.

Neighbour Paula Owen said the home had been under renovation since about April. Other neighbours said the family had just left on vacation to California early Monday.

Squamish RCMP evacuated people from nearby homes on Pierowall Place.

Owen took in a family with two young children who live directly next door to the house while crews worked to put out the blaze, she said. The tree in the neighbour family’s yard also caught fire, Owen said.

Squamish Fire Rescue crews were at the site until about 1 a.m., Owen said.

Squamish RCMP closed Highlands Way in both directions while Squamish Fire Rescue were on the scene.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
