Three Squamish teens were injured in a motor-vehicle mishap near Howe Sound Secondary School on Monday (Jan. 6).
According to reports, two students were parking a friend's car. The standard-transmission vehicle overshot the parking spot and landed in a slough near the school.
Lisa McCullough, School District 48 superintendent, said Reconnect Alternative Program Principal Ryan Massey witnessed the incident and Massey immediately called for help. The two girls in the car were taken to Squamish General Hospital for treatment of injuries, which included broken bones. The car hit another female student before it went into the slough, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said. The third student was also taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.
Pride said the driver of the car wasn't familiar with standard-transmission vehicles.
The car was full of water, Pride said. It could have been a lot worse. The car wasn't fully submerged but had the water levels been different, this could have been a different story.
Our priority is making sure they are OK, he added, when asked if charges are being contemplated.
HSSS Principal Christine Perkins sent a note home with students indicating that counselling is available to students who might be feeling stressed by the incident.
Men arrested
Police arrested a pair of men on New Year's Eve connection with unrelated instances of alleged domestic assault.
On Dec. 31 at around 6:30 p.m., Squamish RCMP responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at a home in the 37000 block of Second Avenue. At the scene, police arrested a 55-year-old Squamish man for assaulting his 41-year-old girlfriend during an argument.
At around 9 p.m., police attended another disturbance at a hotel in the 38000 block of Progress Way. A 27-year-old Squamish man was arrested for having assaulted his 22-year-old girlfriend.
In an unrelated incident, police intervened in an assault that occurred on Jan. 2 at around 9 p.m. at a hotel in the 38000 block of Third Avenue. A 44-year-old Squamish man was arrested for having assaulted a 30-year-old female acquaintance.
Window smashed
Squamish RCMP began 2014 on Jan. 1 at 12:03 a.m., when they responded to a report of an intoxicated man having smashed a plate-glass window of a pub in the 1900 block of Maple Drive after having been asked to leave. RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride described the 26-year-old North Vancouver man as intoxicated and belligerent during the arrest.
Vehicles entered
During the past week, police received five separate reports of vehicles having been broken into and items stolen, with three of those incidents having occurred at recreation-area parking lots.
On Jan. 1, Squamish RCMP received a report of a vehicle having been broken into while parked at Cat Lake between 6:30 and 7 a.m. The front passenger window had been smashed. Stolen were a backpack containing miscellaneous items and a pair of sunglasses.
Also on Jan. 1 at around 9:30 a.m., police received a report that a grey 2012 Jeep Compass had a window smashed and its two front tires slashed while parked in the Garibaldi Provincial Park parking lot. Police are awaiting information on what was stolen. Shortly afterward, a grey 2003 Volkswagen Jetta was reported to have had a window broken and all four of its tired slashed. The contents of the vehicle were strewn about. Police are awaiting information on whether anything was stolen.
On Friday (Jan. 3), police received a report that a Ford F150 had been broken into, with money having been stolen, while the vehicle was parked at a home in the 40000 block of Government Road sometime during the previous four days.
On Saturday (Jan. 4), a Jeep Wrangler that was left unlocked was reported to have been entered sometime between Friday at 11 a.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. while parked in the 39000 block of Government Road. Stolen were a pair of white Oakley sunglasses, some spare change and a small amount of alcohol.
Vehicle damaged
On Sunday (Jan. 5), police received a report that a 2013 Ford Escape had had its passenger-side window smashed while it was parked in a lot in the 38000 block of Cleveland Avenue. The glove box was rummaged through, bit it's not known whether anything was taken.
