Two Squamish men who tried unsuccessfully to avoid being arrested for riding unlicenced motorcycles on a public road are facing multiple charges in connection with the incident.
On Monday (Oct. 28) at around 4:30 p.m., a Squamish RCMP officer on routine patrol near the Squamish Adventure Centre noticed someone riding a dirt bike without a licence plate on Loggers Lane, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
When the officer tried to pull the driver over, the motorcyclist fled "at a high rate of speed," Pride said. The officer then noticed another unlicenced motorcycle being ridden nearby and that rider also fled northbound.
The suspects turned right onto Finch Drive and after other officers joined the pursuit, the suspects were located on a nearby trail, Pride said.
The Squamish men, aged 29 and 32, were both described as "known to local police." Both face charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and failing to stop for police. As well, subsequent investigation resulted in the seizure of small amounts of marijuana and ecstasy from the 32-year-old, who also faces a charge of possession of controlled substances.
Bike stolen
Also on Monday (Oct. 28), police received a report that a white 1992 Honda XR200 motorcycle and red helmet were stolen from the back of a truck that was parked in the 40000 block of Willow Crescent. The theft occurred sometime between midnight and 5 a.m. The bike had been strapped down and locked securely, Pride said.
Winch stolen
Last Tuesday (Oct. 22), police received a report that a winch had been stolen from a Ford F350 truck that had been left at an auto dealership on Hunter Place. Police are awaiting more information on the type of winch stolen and whether any other items were taken.
Man arrested
A 42-year-old man is facing an assault charge in connection with an incident that occurred last Tuesday (Oct. 22) at around 6 p.m. in the 37000 block of Third Avenue. Police arrested the man after responding to a report of a fight. The 52-year-old victim did not require medical treatment for his injuries.
Woman arrested
Also on Tuesday (Oct. 22) at around 9:30 p.m., police attended another reported assault at a home in the 38000 block of Westway Avenue. A 31-year-old woman was arrested a short distance from the scene for allegedly assaulting her 26-year-old boyfriend.
Graffiti artists nabbed
Two 14-year-old boys were arrested after police responded to a report of two teens spray painting the Mamquam River train bridge last Thursday (Oct. 24) at around 5 p.m. The teens were later released into their parents' custody. Graffiti appears to be a growing concern in Squamish as it costs businesses and private citizens money, Pride said. Police thanked those who reported the incident immediately.
Man faces charges
On Sunday (Oct. 27) at around 8:30 p.m., police responded to a report of an assault having occurred in the 1200 block of Victoria Street. A 42-year-old woman reported having been grabbed by a 56-year-old man who was known to her. The suspect was under a probation order to have no contact with the woman. He was arrested nearby and faces charges of assault and breach of probation.
