The Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council (SSISC) is inviting those interested in learning more about invasive plant species, or in helping with the effort to eradicate them, to a pair of events in Squamish next week.
On Thursday (July 7), SSISC officials will lead a tour of sites featuring invasive species such as Japanese knotweed, Scotch broom, yellow-flag iris and giant hogweed, which reproduce quickly and often choke out native plant species. Those taking part in the free tour are asked to meet at 5:15 p.m. at the empty lot across from the Howe Sound Brew Pub. The tour expected to take place from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m.
Volunteers are also being sought next Sunday, July 10, for a weed pull organized by SSISC in partnership with the Squamish River Watershed Society. The pull aims to remove invasive Himalayan blackberry that has recently established itself in the Squamish Estuary. Attendees are asked to bring work gloves and perhaps shovels and meet at 10 a.m. at the fisherman's entrance to the Squamish training dike by the Railway Heritage Museum.
