The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) is looking for a key witness after an unmarked police vehicle struck a pedestrian on Highway 99 and Garibaldi Way in Squamish last week.
At the time of the incident, a white hatchback vehicle was turning right from Garibaldi Way — as seen in the photos — to merge with the southbound lane of Highway 99, the IIO said in a news release.
The IIO is asking for the driver of this vehicle and any potential occupants or other witnesses who may have seen, heard, or recorded the incident to contact the IIO Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477 or email [email protected].
Last week, Squamish RCMP said that the man hit by the vehicle was in critical condition in hospital.
The IIO told The Chief on Monday the crash was “not a fatal incident.”
This collision happened at 10:30 p.m. on March 13, and prompted the IIO to launch an investigation into the matter.
The IIO is an independent civilian agency called to investigate all officer-related incidents involving serious harm or death.
An allegation of wrongdoing isn’t necessary for an investigation to proceed.
