Is the Squamish campfire ban over yet?

Hint, don't plan on a weekend bonfire

The Magee Road fire is almost out, and there has been some rain. So, can Squamish residents go back to having backyard campfires?

Not yet, says Squamish Fire Rescue Chief Bill Stoner.

"The campfire ban will remain in place for now and we will continue to evaluate," Stoner told The Chief.

But that doesn't mean the whole summer will be sans fire.

"A significant change in the weather system could lead to an end to the ban," Stoner said.

The District announced the ban April 17 that all campfires within Squamish were prohibited, even if under 50 centimetres in diameter, and even if a current permit exists.

This came as the Upper Squamish Valley blaze burned out of control and a smaller fire was sparked in Valleycliffe, taking 10 firefighters and some local residents to stamp out.

According to Environment Canada, Friday will be sunny, but rain will move in and showers are expected through Tuesday.
