A six pound, four ounce girl named Elliott Lee Carrington, joined the world at 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday (Jan. 5) and by doing so she became the first baby born in Squamish in 2010.
Baby Elliott - or Ellie for short - is the first child born to Garibaldi Estates residents mom Joey Carrington and her husband of two and a half years, Scott Carrington.
The Carringtons moved to Squamish from Whistler in mid-2007 so Scott could work as a construction coordinator on an Olympic Games contract for Bell Mobility.
"He's building the cellular network for the Olympics," said Joey, who is a hairdresser at Devlin Salon.
Baby Elliott was due Jan. 17 but the Carringtons chose to have her arrive on earlier in the month instead and booked a caesarean section.
"I just wanted her to be nice and safe when she came out and no surprises. I had a room full of incredible doctors looking after me," said the Calgary, Alta. native.
While resting in a hospital bed, the new mom said the entire procedure was relatively quick and easy.
"I got here at 7 o'clock in the morning and she was born at 8:50 so that's the whole sha-bam, an hour and 50 minutes later. That's pre-op and all that jazz."
The new mom said she had a spinal block administered and although she couldn't really feel pain, she could feel some tugging and pulling during the birth.
When asked what it was like to be awake while having a c-section, Joey was speechless.
"It wasI don't know what it was like. That's a tough one. It was amazing."
Joey said her husband was equally amazed with the birth of their daughter.
"My husband was just floored by it," she said. "He was really amazing. He was ready to be a dad."
Scott's mother Heather was also ready for the new arrival. She's so eager to be a grandmother for the second time that she has come from Coquitlam to help the new parents get through the first week of being parents.
"She's very healthy," the grandmother said while rocking the swaddled baby. "All the functions are working well."
Joey added Elliott is a very healthy newborn.
"She just likes to eat," she said. "She's doing great with breast feeding. We did that very quickly after and we just haven't had any problems."
When asked if Joey has been able to get much sleep since her newborn arrived, Joey smiled and shook her head.
"No, sleep is definitely limited which is hilarious because we're sleepers in our house."
