Legacy funds decision deferred … again

The three remaining groups vying for the $610,000 left in the Squamish Sport Legacy Funds will have to wait a little longer - either June 7 or 14 to be specific.

The three remaining groups vying for the $610,000 left in the Squamish Sport Legacy Funds will have to wait a little longer - either June 7 or 14 to be specific.

At the District of Squamish Committee of the Whole meeting on Tuesday (May 24) the majority of council was ready to make a decision but Coun. Patricia Heintzman was adamant that more information on Quest University's fields be brought forward before she made a decision, and Coun. Bryan Raiser was absent due to illness.

Coun. Doug Race started the discussion by saying he wanted to support allocating $260,000 to the mountain bike skills park and $350,000 to the Sports Legacy Park. He said turfing the fields wasn't a smart spending decision, not unlike building the Adventure Centre.

"It has a huge impact on the District of Squamish financially, and a huge impact on the operating budget," he said.

"It's not a matter of this sport is better than that sport," said Race. "It's a matter of how we make these funding decisions."

The remaining councillors leaned in the opposite direction and spoke to supporting turfing the all weather fields.

"This is a piece of infrastructure we definitely need and over the years we've achieved a lot of infrastructure by coupling borrowing and grants," said Lonsdale.

Mayor Greg Gardner said he supported the all weather fields but also wanted to allocate some money to the sports park.
