Legacy park moves ahead

Project awaits final approval

The proposal to build a year-round Nordic sports training facility in Squamish only has one more target to hit before the project is a go.

For the past two years, the Callaghan Winter Sports Club (CWSC) has worked toward building a Nordic sports training venue on a 7.8-hectare parcel on the north side of Raven Drive.

The project includes paved trails for roller sports, trails for running, a climbing bluff and possibly a disc golf course. Two or three year-round downhill ski jumps are also slated for the land. On Tuesday (June 4), council unanimously passed third reading for the project, leaving it with one step to go - council's final rubber stamp of approval.

The proposal is positive for Squamish, Coun. Doug Race said. It's close to Brennan Park Recreation Centre and partners with the Squamish Rod and Gun Club.

"There's the potential to provide a lot of sporting opportunity for youth, as well as adults," he said.

During the project's public hearing in May, a neighbour raised concerns over the sports park. Sandra Haffey, who lives near the property, asked whether the development would have an impact on the water supply, noting residents in the area are on wells.
