Local man arrested in possession of stolen bike

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

A 30-year-old Squamish man is facing a charge of possession of stolen property after police discovered that the bicycle sticking out of the back of his truck had earlier been reported stolen.

Early Tuesday (June 28) morning, Squamish RCMP officers on patrol observed a white pickup truck with a bicycle sticking out of the back end of the truck. Police pulled over the vehicle and identified the female driver and male passenger, RCMP Sgt. Eric Rochette said in a statement.

A police investigation revealed that the bike had been stolen. The male was arrested, and faces a charge of possession of stolen property under $5,000.

Hit-and-run driver nabbed

On Monday (June 27), police received a report of a hit-and-run along Loggers Lane, and found that a male had been hit by a passing truck while riding his bicycle.

The victim, who was not injured, was able to provide a licence plate number for the truck. Further investigation revealed that the rider and driver of the truck knew each other and that the collision may have been intentional, Rochette said.

The truck's driver, a 38-year-old Squamish man, is likely facing a charge of assault with a weapon as a result of the incident, he said.

Break-in under investigation

Police investigating a report of stolen copper wires and piping at a decommissioned wastewater treatment plant on Galbraith Road near the Squamish oceanfront arrived to find that the locks on several storage units at the site had been cut, but that nothing had been stolen. Police received the report last Wednesday (June 22) at around 9:45 a.m. Police are asking that anyone with information about the incident call Squamish RCMP at (604) 892-6100 or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-222-TIPS (8277).

Motorcyclist faces charges

Also last Wednesday, Squamish RCMP officers on foot patrol saw a black, older-model motorcycle being ridden by a rider in dark clothing and a white-striped helmet eastbound on Garibaldi Way.

The officer noticed that the clothing, motorcycle and helmet were similar to an uninsured motorcycle, helmet and clothing he had seen at a home earlier that evening, Rochette said. The motorcycle was later seen on Mamquam Road and police attempted to stop it. The motorcycle, however, did not stop after the RCMP emergency equipment was activated.

The officer, though, was able to locate the rider hiding in a yard near where officer attempted to pull over his vehicle. The driver, a 41-year-old Squamish resident, will be facing charges of failure to stop for police and driving while prohibited.
