Logging operation underway south of Quest University

The area has a Private Managed Forest designation

A logging project is currently underway in the Garibaldi Highlands.

Coast Aggregates Ltd. is currently harvesting trees on the site south of Quest University.

Once timber harvesting is complete, and fire mitigation work is done, the area will be replanted, according to the company's president Greg Parker.

Parker said in the long-term, the area could be used for gravel extraction, but not for “many years into the future.”

“Our plan is to harvest the second growth trees this year to allow enough time to grow another new stand of trees to a suitable size for harvesting prior to any future gravel extraction,” said Parker in an email. “Although market factors are outside of our control this is our current plan.”

Parker said once the work is completed the previous trail will be restored to the same condition it was prior to the logging work.

The logging is being done on the same land parcel as the nearby Diamond Head gravel pit on Mamquam Road.

Forty dead trees were also removed along Mamquam Road and the Carpenter Sons for safety reasons, according to Parker.

Last month, the District of Squamish put out a news release detailing road closures and detours while Coast Aggregates and Alternative Forest Operations Ltd. undertook operations in the area.

Over 439 acres of the private land south of the university is currently zoned by the District for resource extraction, and the area has a Private Managed Forest designation.
