Garbage left on Anderson Beach after the May long weekend has residents of the area fuming over the mess they are left with to clean up.

Jackie Herity lives near Anderson Beach with her husband and children and said the garbage left on the beach was "heartbreaking."

"It was noisy all weekend but it is the mess that was left behind that concerns me it breaks my heart," she said. "It happens every year around the long weekend and now there is broken glass and bottles and the beach is unsafe for children as well as animals."

Herity said the appearance of the beach has also been destroyed and she doesn't understand how people could just leave their garbage.

"Ultimately I would just like to see people clean up after themselves. Why not leave it so you can come back to something beautiful?"

Herity would like to see signs reminding people of the fines for littering as well as police patrolling the morning after long weekend parties.

"If the police could make their presence known people might be afraid of having to pay a fine and might not litter," she said.

For now the mess will be left to the locals in the area to cleanup.

"I will be taking garbage bags with me every time I go to the beach," she said. "It's sad when you go there and see it. And if you don't clean it up, no one else will."
