Man dies in accident

Squamish RCMP were busy with files with week
This week's police briefs.

A 41-year-old Squamish man died from injuries sustained in an accident on the Sea to Sky Highway near the Callaghan Forest Service Road on Dec. 17 about 9 a.m.

Squamish RCMP and Traffic Services assisted Whistler RCMP at the scene. A northbound pickup had reportedly crossed over to the southbound lane and struck an SUV. The pickup caught fire instantly and the driver did not survive. The driver of the SUV suffered a broken leg and was taken to Whistler Medical Centre. 

The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.

Houseboat fire

A candle seems to have been the cause of a houseboat fire in the Blind Channel on Dec. 16. 

Squamish RCMP and the District Fire Department arrived to find the houseboat engulfed in flames. The owner and sole occupant escaped but suffered burns to his hands and face as well as smoke inhalation. He was transported to Lion’s Gate Hospital.

The man had been sleeping at the time and may have knocked over a burning candle, according to a police report.

Tools stolen

Someone broke into a storage locker on the 38100 block of Westway Avenue sometime during the past two weeks. Items stolen included a Ridgid circular saw, a MasterCraft angular grinder and a Dremel grinder kit. 

Car skids into ditch

A Honda Civic was travelling north on Highway 99 at Culliton Creek Bridge on Dec. 16 when the vehicle skidded, crossed over to the south lane and landed into a ditch, according to RCMP.

The driver was injured, but police issued her a ticket for speed relative to conditions.

Dirt bike stolen

Two suspicious men were reported to be pushing a dirt bike on Main Street near Logger’s Lane on Dec. 17 and attempted to hide from police, according to an RCMP report.

RCMP located them and discovered the bike had been stolen from the 37700 block of Third Avenue. Charges are being recommended.

Crash into light pole

While responding to a report of a hit and run by an older red vehicle at Highway 99 and Finch Drive on Dec. 18, RCMP received another report that an older red vehicle had crashed into a light pole at Cleveland Avenue. The driver displayed signs of impairment, RCMP said. He was sent to local hospital for treatment and a blood sample was taken. Charges are expected.

Christmas lights stolen

Squamish RCMP received reports of stolen Christmas lights from three homes in the Valleycliffe area. The thefts occurred sometime during the night on Dec. 14. A silver Honda Civic was seen in the area and may be related to the incidents, police said.
