Man dies of suspect drug overdose, say police

Illegal drugs an issue in Squamish, as with other communities; Sgt. Wayne Pride

A Squamish resident is dead after a suspected drug overdose last weekend, say police.

Early Saturday morning, at approximately 2:45 a.m., Squamish RCMP were called to a residence in Brackendale to find two men in need of medical attention, Sgt. Wayne Pride said.

A 40-year-old man died and a 43-year-old man was taken to hospital after consuming what police believe was cocaine, he said.

“It seems there may have been medical conditions exacerbated by the drugs,” Pride said.

Squamish sees similar illegal drugs come through the town as those used in the Lower Mainland, just in a smaller quantity, he said. Often cocaine is cut with different products to maximize the quantity of drug, Pride noted. As with all illegal drugs, a buyer doesn’t know what they are getting, he added.

Traditionally, the majority of drug cases Squamish RCMP deal with relate to marijuana and crack cocaine, Pride said. Unfortunately, as with most communities, there is a lot of alcohol abuse as well, he said.
