Police were out in force in Paradise Valley Thursday night.
A man wanted in connection with an assault that happened in the past few weeks is in custody after police searched through the area for several hours, RCMP told The Squamish Chief.
The man was spotted in a campground in the area Thursday evening after dinner time, according to Inspector Neil Cross of the Squamish RCMP.
There was previous information that the man could have guns, but no one had actually seen the man with a weapon yesterday, Cross reported.
“Officers went up to the area and tried to contain the campground area where the person was seen,” Cross said. Officers from Squamish and Whistler and four members of the Emergency Response Team were deployed, along with a police dog, according to Cross.
The man ran off into the bush. Police searched the surrounding forest for a few hours but were unable to locate him early in the evening. Another sighting came in at about 10 p.m. on the Cheakamus reserve, Cross said, but again the man eluded police.
At about 1 a.m. the man was found on the reserve lands and was arrested without incident, according to Cross.
“He is currently in custody and will be taken before the courts,” Cross said Friday morning.
Cross said no residents were locked down during the evening, and the public was not in danger.
The man was known to police prior to this incident, he added.
