The highway has claimed the life of another pedestrian.

A 47-year-old man was killed in Pemberton on Highway 99 and Portage Road on Friday night, according to Whistler RCMP Sgt. Rob Knapton.

At 10:30 Friday, April 13, the RCMP were called to the 1500-block of Portage Road in Pemberton where a man had been struck by a vehicle heading northbound on the highway, Knapton said.

The highway was closed for hours to allow for evidence collection and investigation.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service (ICARS) was brought in from the Lower Mainland, Knapton said, to assist with the investigation.

The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene when police arrived and is co-operating with the investigation, he added.

The next of kin have been notified.

“Visibility on the highway is a constant concern for us,” Knapton said, adding he wasn’t assigning blame for the accident on this pedestrian. “Anyone who walks on the road we want to make sure they are doing everything they can to be visible.”

In early February, a Squamish man was fatally hit while he was walking on Highway 99 in the northbound lane near Loggers Lane and Finch Drive.

In March, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was called in after an unmarked police vehicle struck a pedestrian on Highway 99 and Garibaldi Way.

Knapton noted there are various companies that offer outerwear that is reflective that dramatically improves the visibility of walkers and bikers at night.
